Born and raised in Newport News, VA, Elliott Torn became interested in photography at the age of 10 when he used his saved allowance money to buy a darkroom kit from a neighbor for $5.00. He started developing film he shot on a hand me down 2-1/4 inch film camera. Latter while in the 8th grade, he purchased his first adjustable camera and light meter and continued to take and process his photos in black and white.

After high school he attended the apprentice school at Newport News Shipbuilding and took a greater interest in photography. He started reading Kodak manuals on different films and techniques in portraiture. The second year in the apprentice school he took a part time job at Olan Mills and was taught their techniques in portraits. The following year he started photographing weddings.

In 1976 he started taking classes in photography at Thomas Nelson Community College and in 1978 was hired by a studio in Portsmouth as a color printer in their photo lab. The following year he was hired by McIntosh Studios in Norfolk and stayed there until 1981 when he started his business in commercial and portrait photography. He has continued that business thru the present time. In the past years he has serviced accounts including; Mercedes Trucks, City of Newport News, City of Hampton, Norfolk General and Hampton General Hospitals (now called “Sentara”), Riverside Health System, Mary Immaculate Hospital (Bon Secure), Tidewater Physicians Multi-Specialty Group, Tidewater Physical Therapy, The Associated Press, and the National Trainers Association to name a few. His specialty is in high quality head and shoulders and ¾ length executive portraits and in candids for various events as well as annual report and brochure photography. A total of 41 years of experience, constant learning and improvements has made him one of the finest quality portrait photographers, candid photographers and digital retouchers in the Hampton Roads, Southeastern Virginia area.
